I've been laid off by big organizations two or three times. Each time, it was basically the same fight: they wanted revenue. I wanted relationships. We never quite agreed on which one was the point.
So I stopped trying to convince them and started working with organizations that already got it.
Bold Move Consulting is a one-person shop. People sometimes hear that and picture someone with a laptop and a dream. What they get is someone with decades of experience translating between the boardroom and the front line — someone who's sat in the high-stakes strategy meetings and can explain what any of it means to the person who actually talks to donors every day.
That gap — between big-think strategy and on-the-ground execution — is where most small nonprofits lose money they didn't know they were leaving on the table. Closing that gap is what I do.
I work primarily with small nonprofits — mostly under $5M, often under $1M in annual revenue. Not because I can't handle complexity. Because that's where the work is interesting, the stakes are real, and nobody's hired a team of six consultants to write a report that will live in a drawer.
You get me. Not a “junior associate”. Me.
One more thing, because people always ask: I've been doing improvisational comedy for almost 30 years. Teaching it. Performing it. Loving it unreasonably.
It's not a metaphor I use in blog posts. I actually bring it into client work — because yes-and, deep listening, and staying present when the plan falls apart are not just improv skills. They're fundraising skills. They're leadership skills. They just happen to also be hilarious in the right context.
